Nose Reshaping
The shape of the nose is essentially determined by its cartilaginous and bony framework. However, the appearance of the nose also depends on the cutaneous and soft tissue. Frequently, there are for one thing more or less serious visible nasal deformities, which, though being harmless, may be very embarrassing for the affected patients, such as a hook nose, a crooked nose, a flat nose or a saddle nose. For the other thing there are severe malformations, such as the cleft lip nasal deformity. Nasal defects may also be caused by tumours or accidents, including the complete loss of the nose.

Operative Techniques for Nose Reshaping
If there is need, rhinoplasty can be performed in Munich by Prof. Dr. Berghaus along with surgery aimed at repairing functional impairments in the nose which may cause nasal breathing problems. For a nose reshaping surgery, commonly referred to as rhinoplasty, there are generally two operation methods which can be applied: the “open” and “closed” (endonasal) operation technique.
OPEN NOSE RESHAPING SURGERY
The open rhinoplasty requires a small incision on the nasal dorsum to separate the nasal skin from the cartilage and the bones with the aim to facilitate the exposure of the skeletal framework. If the operation is correctly performed with the help of surgical magnifying glasses and extremely fine suture material, the “open” surgery generally does not leave visible scars.
CLOSED NOSE RESHAPING SURGERY
In some cases, it may be preferable to resort to the endonasal (“closed”) operation procedure to leave the nasal skin intact and thereby avoid visible scars.
Provided that the surgeon has gained sufficient experience, this minimally invasive procedure is suitable to correct many nasal deformities. Depending on the requirements and the patient’s wishes this technique enables the reshaping, resection, suture fixation and reinforcement of the nasal framework.
In both operation techniques, a precise transection of the nasal bone (osteotomy) is required to straighten or narrow the nose.
Prof. Berghaus prefers the use of Piezotechnique (Ultrasound technology) for extremely precise and gentle treatment of the nasal bones.
In our private practice in Munich, rhinoplasty is performed by Prof. Dr. Berghaus with the help of strong magnifying glasses to ensure the achievement of the best operation results. We use fine suture material which generally dissolves within a very short period of time. Consequently, no stitch removal is necessary and normally, no residual suture material remains in the tissue.
Preparation of Rhinoplasty
In the Private Practice at Maximiliansplatz in Munich, Prof. Dr. Berghaus always carefully evaluates the findings together with the patient. Rhinoplasty Aftercare after the external reshaping of the nose, the nasal dorsum is stabilized for about 6 days by an aluminum splint. If there is need, cooling pads can be applied to the face in the immediate postoperative period to reduce swellings of the tissue.
To provide internal support to the nose and to facilitate breathing, the patient sometimes may wear tiny silicone tubes which do not cause discomfort and can be easily removed. We generally avoid applying a nasal packing, since it would make it difficult to breathe through the nose.
After the correction of the nasal septum and nose reshaping (Septorhinoplasty), swellings and bruising usually disappear almost completely within about two weeks and therefore are hardly visible after the removal of the nasal splint. With the swellings of the skin progressively disappearing, the new shape of the nose becomes increasingly evident over the course of several months.
